About Me
Hi! sooo a little about me. I’m Angie. The home cook behind the food blog Siriusly Hungry. We’re about to get a little personal here, and that’s ok. I figure If you know me then you know my food and that’s the whole point here ๐ A little warning before I start. I absolutely love using smiley faces. LOL shows up a lot and I probably use too many exclamation points, lol, see!!! There I go, I can’t help it lol, ok ok .. now let me tell you about me ๐
How It all started…
I went to culinary school more than 20 years ago. I flunked out of Regular college. Apparently, being in labor was not enough of an excuse to miss my finals. My days and nights were filled with watching the Food Network in between changing diapers and feedings. Mind you, I have never really cooked before becoming a mom, maybe a pancake from a box here and there, but nothing fancy. Although, I was known for emptying out the cup of noodles seasonings and doing my own thing.. ย I guess that was a clue, lolย
Food network back in 1997/98 was nothing like it is now. It was just people talking about food. A lot of prepping, putting uncooked dishes under the counter and coming out completely done lol. Even though it looked crazy, I immediately felt a pull towards that. I knew that whatever it was that I did, it had to revolve around food. It made complete sense. I grew up around a huge Hispanic community in Manhattan. That means there was food and people aplenty lol
There were so many commercials for the New York Restaurant School and honestly, I enrolled at NYRS because I was a teen mom and had no clue what I was going to do. I liked eating so why not. And besides being a teen mom meant that the โnormalโ path to success aka adulthood was not in the cards for me- so off to chef school I went.
Culinary school taught me technique and bomb ass knife skills, if I do say so myself ๐ More importantly it introduced me to so many new worlds! Before culinary school the only herb I knew of was cilantro.. now, I can’t imagine not using as many herbs as I can in my cooking.
After culinary school…
After graduating I just wanted to learn more. I worked in and out of kitchens. Mostly out because the hours are favorable when you’re raising kids. But I wasn’t made of money and I’m still not, going out to eat to try new things is a luxury. Next best thing is becoming a cook book hoarder, and binge watching all the food on tv. Yup I did and still do watch all the food tv.. Just trying to soak it all in. I’m always Siriusly Hungry for all things food;-)
Sometimes, I wish I was indeed in the Matrix, just so I can be programmed with all the knowledge ๐ I’m very proud of that Matrix reference by the way. If you know me then you know that it took me yearssssss to understand that damn movie lol.
Throughout the years, no matter what job I held, I never stopped cooking. I cooked for my kids, my family, friends, hosted dinner parties and catered several as well. Teaching others how to understand ingredients and transform them is my jam too.
Fast forward to present day. I’m still a cook book hoarder and the mom to two beautiful girls, adults, technically ๐ .. I can’t get used to saying that lol. Those two have always been and still are my greatest motivators and biggest inspiration.ย Keeping up with their very different palettes always keeps me on my creative toes.
Me now ๐
Money has a huge influence on how I cook too, mostly because I don’t have a lot of it. I’m always looking for good food on sale. I love me some coupons and I think I have every rebate app in the world! lol Just cuz I’m broke doesn’t mean we can’t eat well ๐
I take on any ingredient and transform them into delicious meals. No matter how shallow my pockets are. Nowadays there are a ton of options for good food, local/fresh veggies that are very affordable. Iโll show you how to do the same. How to look at your pantry and go from there.
This food blog, Siriusly Hungry, started because I really enjoy cooking and feeding people.. I want the same for you. My hope is that my recipes and tips make cooking less intimidating, and here’s a not so secret secret.. You don’t have to have a swollen wallet to eat well either.
I get asked a lot why I don’t own a restaurant. My answer is I didn’t go to culinary school to become a chef of any restaurant. I went to learn, to broaden my little view of the world. To learn how to cook like I saw on tv. To make people in my life as happy as the folk in those food shows.. Das it ๐
If you’ve read this far, you’re a rock star and I appreciate you!!! I hope you get as much out of this food blog as I do.
I’ve told you a lot about me. Next is taking a look at the About Siriusly Hungry PageโฆSee what kind of recipes you can expect from me ๐ย
P.S. One more thing, in case you’re wondering about the blog name. I am a huge Harry Potter Fan!! Huge! I was inspired to name my blog after Sirius Black, Harry’s godfather, and cousin to the notorious Bellatrix Lestrange. Saying Siriusly Hungry is so much cooler than Seriously Hungry .. Lol at least I think so ๐ย
